Artist Statement

My daughter, Nadine, suggested that we take an evening art class together the year before my retirement. It was a fun experience being around serious art students at Fleischer. I had always loved art, but had an agenda too full to indulge this interest. After retirement, I took a daytime class. I was drawn to the Center in the Park by the reputation of the work of the senior artists. One class led to another.

My work reflects a journey in progress. There are photographs and watercolors of photographs from my travels starting with Senegal, my first trip to Africa. There are paintings of live models from various classes. I am captivated by the challenges of the human figure. There are still life studies that attempt to capture the bounty of nature and there are landscapes that represent the natural beauty of the Northwest Philadelphia area. I am finding my way. —— Marlene G. Patterson
